The Algarve region of Portugal is a mecca for golf lovers wanting to try a variety of courses on a golfing holiday. From proper links courses to those found inland away from the sea, the Algarve region and the town of Albufeira is particularly popular. In this article, we are going to take a look at a number of courses near Albufeira, the perfect place to make your base if you wish to undertake a golfing holiday to Portugal.
One of the older courses in Portugal, Pines Cliff is a 9-hole course and certainly a popular golfing attraction in the region. Don’t let the fact that it is only a 9-hole offering put you off. Here, you will see some of the most spectacular views the Algarve has to offer with each hole offering unique vistas of the ocean and the beautiful beaches in the region. Many players come to Pines Cliff to play the legendary final hole, the ‘Devils Parlor’. This par 3 has a very difficult tee shot that needs to carry over a ravine into the green below!
The 9-hole course at Balaia is relatively new and was only opened in 2001. It is a great place to come and practice your short game, particularly with your irons while your precision off the tee and the ability to control shot length is a must. Balaia has a very challenging layout but that should not put off beginners. In fact, as mentioned above, it is a great course to work on one of golf most crucial aspects, your short game. Note that Balaia is a very popular course, so if you want to play here, book early!
Should you prefer to steer clear of the 9-hole courses in the region and want a full round of 18 holes, then Salgados golf course is just for you. This course, situated on relatively flat land behind the beaches of Praia de Gale is a links-styled course that can offer a challenge, particularly when the wind gets up. This brings a number of hazards into play including some difficult rough as well as a multitude of water hazards. To shoot low here, you need to be a fairly skilled player but having said that, this course is a great way to experience links golf at its best.
