The exhibition area is in Kauklahti, a growing local hub, which is being developed in harmony with its rich heritage of cultural and local history. Kauklahti is one of the oldest urban areas in Espoo and also the site of the remains of a Stone Age village, the earliest habitation discovered in the city.
The 2006 Espoo Housing Fair will present a rich and interesting cityscape, in which a leafy small town milieu is coupled with compact, small-scale building. The houses and their facades merge with mixed-use streets and gardens to form a beautiful totality. Good planning has been invested in: all the builders were selected on the basis of a quality contest and the architects included some of the most famous names in the country.
New buildings in the area will comprise terraced and semi-detached houses, town villas and small apartment buildings as well as 25 individualistic single-family homes built according to the wishes of their future residents. Almost half of the 262 dwellings in the area are apartments to rent for young people.
A town house called Palttina will form the heart of the area. The building and its grounds will house a day-care centre emphasising art and the environment as well as a park space for local residents. The hope is that it will become a meeting spot; that people in future would tell each other they'd "see you at the town house steps."
The transport connections to the exhibition area are excellent. The shore railway line will take you to Kauklahti station, only a short walk away, in half an hour from the centre of Helsinki, or you can drive via the ring motorway Kehä III and Kauklahdenväylä.
