   Otaniemi

Tapiola’s neighbouring area Otaniemi is a centre of technology.
The greater part of the highest education and research in technology in Finland
is located in this area, which was designed by Academician Alvar Aalto.

In addition to Aalto, architects that have enriched Otaniemi’s redbrick facade include Kaija and Heikki Siren, Reima and Raili Pietilä, Timo Penttilä, Aulis Blomstedt and Markus Toivio.

Over the years, one of the most significant concentrations of technology in the country has emerged around Helsinki University of Technology(HUT) and the Lifelong Learning Institute Dipoli. Among others, the Technical Research Centre of Finland VTT, the pulp and paper research laboratory KCL, the Geological Survey of Finland GTK, CSC – Scientific Computing and the Innopoli business generator, which transforms new ideas and research results into business, operate in close interaction with HUT’s research and education.

Tapiola and its surroundings have quickly developed into northern Europe’s leading centre of technology. Approximately three out of every four industrial jobs in Espoo are in high-tech fields. Almost 500 international companies have operations in the city.

   The Tapiola Garden City

Visitors are often amazed by Espoo’s cityscape because it is different to
most others in Finland. Instead of a traditional city centre, the city
has five separate local centres.

On the national scale, the best-known of these is perhaps the garden city Tapiola: in its planning, the best architectural resources were employed to emphasize the harmony between inhabitation and nature.

The building of the Tapiola centre began in late 1950s based on a suggestion from the architect Aarne Ervi, who had won the planning competition. One of his works, the central tower, has later become the symbol of Tapiola.

Today, Tapiola is a dynamic centre of business and cultural life. The home stage of the internationally renowned chamber orchestra – Tapiola Sinfonietta – is the Espoo Cultural Centre. This building – named “Kuunsilta” (“Moon Bridge”), and designed by architect Arto Sipinen – is a sight in itself, right in the heart of Tapiola.
